What is a stormwater management system?

​A stormwater management system is any man-made system designed to direct, treat and/or detain rainfall runoff. These systems can include components such as inlets, drains, manholes, storm pipes, ditches, stormwater storage and stormwater treatment devices. There are a wide variety of stormwater storage and treatment devices including dry and wet ponds, bio-swales, infiltration and exfiltration systems, underground detention, sand filters and stormwater wetlands.

​​Why are inspections important?

​Proper inspections and maintenance of your stormwater system is important for a number of reasons. Improperly maintained systems can lead to a number of costly situations including complete system failure, destruction of property, loss of life and pollution of streams and lakes. Periodic inspections by a qualified professional engineer are also required by various government agencies and can lead to fines and other enforcement actions if they are not completed.

What is included in a stormwater inspection?

​A typical stormwater inspection includes an inspection by a qualified professional engineer of all components associated with the stormwater management system. We evaluate the major components of the system and provide a written assessment along with maintenance recommendations. When issues are identified, we will reinspect to ensure the items have been addressed properly.

What is the process?

​We will schedule an inspection of your facility prior to the date specified on your permit. Our typical workflow includes upfront research on your system, travel to the site, inspection and photography of the facility, and documentation of findings with recommendations.

When are inspections needed?

​Inspections should be performed on annual basis depending on the permit. Some systems require more frequent inspections, such as after large storms.
